Get together and innovate!

It doesn't matter how we call it. Open innovation, collaborative innovation, value network innovation... There's been a lot of talk about innovation in recent history and many frameworks and definitions have been presented or suggested. Fact is that our world has significantly changed. Technological breakthroughs go hand in hand with consumer driven market innovation. Anyone, from the largest corporation to the creative individual round the corner can become your biggest competitor tomorrow. But most importantly, because of increased business connectivity and the speed of the web, not taking steps forward is taking a step back. So, it is time to act!

Today, in a way, Porter's 5 Forces have multiplied and collaboration has become a necessity, because of the increased mobility and availability of knowledge outside of organizational boundaries.  But for many different reasons, collaboration can also be difficult at times. This is what we call our first degree of freedom in open innovation.

Innovation in itself is not always easy either. Surely, by now many organizations have installed some kind of structural innovation process, but do these processes foster only incremental, almost straightforward innovations? In many cases they do. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with successful incremental innovations, but given the increasing non-linearity of international business, it is worthwile looking at disruption (or your blue ocean, if you will). Anyway, in order to survive in the long run, innovation has also become a necessity and its unpredictable outcome and management complexity can be called our second degree of freedom in open innovation. Unfortunately, there are many more aspects that require your attention. For instance, what is the strategic fit between you and your innovation partners, what is the ideal win-win pay-off for everyone, what does the power distribution in the market look like or how far along the innovation maturity curve are you? And your partners? And the idea that you're currently working on...?
